A Brief History of ypsilanti
Founded in 1823 and named after Greek war hero Demetrius Ypsilanti, the city played a key role in Michigan’s early railroad expansion. Ypsi became a manufacturing hub in the 20th century, with key contributions to wartime production. It’s also home to Eastern Michigan University, established in 1849. The city has long been a space for innovation, activism, and independent thinking—a tradition that continues today in its music, art, education, and community leadership.
